Voice Output Communication Aides (VOCA's)
There are many different types of Voice Output Communication Aides (VOCA’s) available. They are devices which speak for students so they promote inclusion for students with limited communication skills. They can be an invaluable resource if selected and used meaningfully.
These examples show how voice output devices are used at Tangara School. Single switches are easy to use across a range of activities. For example, during Roll Call all students can say "here I am". VOCA's can be motivating for many students with special needs and therefore can be used to prompt basic communication such as "toilet".
Multi-level VOCA's work really well in choice making activities for students who are capable of using them. The example above is set up for a cooking lesson. Some devices can hold messages for multiple visual boards. This can work well in a routine activity such as Morning Circle. Visual boards and messages can be set up for the days of the week, the weather and feelings.
