Switches
In this section we have provided photos on how switches are used at Tangara School for students with specific special needs. Hints on using switches in your classroom are below.
Switch Activated ToyStudents must push the switch in order to make the dog walk, jump and bark.
Switches can be used to turn the toy on and off only and can also be set so that constant pressure is required to continue the toy moving. |
Voice Output SwitchThis switch has a recorded message on it. When the student pushes the button the recorded message is played. The visual placed on top reinforces what is being said.
The voice recordings can be changed when needed. |
Computer SwitchSwitches can be used to assist students to access computer programs.
There are a variety of cause and effect programs that can be adapted for switch use as well as slide shows, presentations and choice making activities. |
Adaptive Switch BoxesAlmost anything which requires a power source and has an on/off function can be adapted for use with a switch.
Students have the control of turning the equipment on and off. This can be very motivating and empowering for the student. The equipment is connected to the box which is then connected to the switch. The switch then needs to be pressed by the student in order for the equipment to function. Some ideas of equipment you can use include CD/tape recorders, lava lamps, blenders and plug in toys. |
Hints on using Switches
>Place a visual on top of a voice output switch to indicate its purpose and to reinforce what it is saying.
>Using velcro to attach a switch to a table prevents it from moving.
>Toys from retail stores can be adapted to be switch activated.
