Picture Prompts for Daily Tasks
Using picture prompts in daily tasks can help students with special needs to develop independence in everyday activities. When teaching students how to use picture prompts it is important that the verbal cues and accompanying sign language/gestures are specific, simple and consistent.
Below are examples of how picture prompts are used at Tangara School. Picture prompts can teach safe behaviours and socially acceptable behaviours. They can be used to teach students to use skills across environments.

Picture prompts are also a wonderful tool for developing self help and personal care skills. For example, dressing, setting the table, making a sandwich and tooth brushing. They should be placed in sequential order and/or in the area they are needed. The aim is for students to use the picture prompt without verbal directions. When the student can complete the task without the picture prompt, it is no longer needed.
